What Does TPMS Mean?

Tire Pressure Warning Light_216248072

If you’ve taken a good look at your dashboard, you might notice the letters TPMS on occasion. What does TPMS mean? TPMS stands for Tire Pressure Monitoring System, or the onboard system that measures the air pressure inside each of your tires. This is a built-in safety device that keeps track of your tire condition automatically. When everything is normal, you’ll hardly notice it in place. But if your tire pressure goes above or below the recommended guidelines, you’ll get an instant visual alert – a glowing or flashing TPMS light.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System Features

Most new vehicles are equipped with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System, because it simplifies your vehicle maintenance significantly. The TPMS connects to sensors in each tire, so you can get instant and precise measurements of your entire set. If you notice an amber light with “TPMS” or a flat tire symbol, your air pressure might be low – leading to issues like:

  • Poor traction
  • Decreased load carrying capability
  • A flat tire or blowout
  • Poor fuel economy

Proper Tire Inflation

So, why is tire pressure so important? We’ve gone through some of the issues that result from underinflated tires, so let’s see the benefits of a properly inflated tire:

  • Reduced tread movement increases the life of the tire
  • Reduced rolling resistance increases vehicle efficiency
  • Increased water dispersion decreases the likelihood of hydroplaning

If you’re unsure about your manufacturer-recommended air pressure levels, check your owner’s manual. Your manual will tell you information specific for your make and model, so you can be sure to maintain your set properly. If you need to add extra air, just look for a gas station around New Milford or Trumbull with a tire filling area or stop by our service center. In a pinch, you can even use a regular bike pump to top off your tires!
